Welcome at the Contessa Club the Netherlands
(Published in the summer 2007 issue of the CO32 Class Association magazine)
What started out as a small-scaIe initiative by two enthusiastic Contessa owners three years ago, has slowly but steadily evolved into a lively and informal association in the Netherlands and Flanders, called the Contessa Club Nederland. The number of boats has grown from just under ten in 2004 to almost fifty by the beginning of 2007. Since last year, membership has opened up for other types of Contessas than just the 32, and by now we have three 28-footers, two 26-footers and even a 38-foot Contessa that was originally designed by Sparkman & Stephens during the seventies.
The association — which has no formal status — meets two times each year. In March, a ‘dry’ meeting is held with a presentation on some issue that is interesting to many Contessa sailors. This year for instance, our member Chiel Mariën (C032 "Lacatrine") told us about his impressive voyages along the Norwegian coast, past the North Cape and into the Barents Sea, the White Sea and via the Russian rivers and Lake Ladoga back to the Baltic and home. Another of his trips went from St. Petersburg southwards along the Russian rivers to the Black Sea, Istanbul and the Mediterranean. In 2005, a marvellous presentation was given by Jacqueline Bakker, who single-handedly took her Contessa 32 “Pro” from the Dutch Antilles via the Azores to the Netherlands. Needless to say, such first-hand personal experiences are valuable and quite inspiring.
Apart from these well-visited events, we annually organise a meeting on the water by the beginning of September, where participants sail an informal race and have a drink, a chat and a dinner barbecue together. Last year, almost eighteen boats and some sixty people joined for this meeting, including some heartily welcomed Contessas from Belgium. Just as previously, this meeting will this year be organised at Hellevoetsluis, bordering the Haringvliet in the Southern part of the Netherlands.
In 2006, the Contessa Club Nederland has offered its cooperation to a five-page article on the C032 in one of the leading sailing magazines of the Netherlands, called the Waterkampioen. The article, for which two boats hit the water for a photo shoot, was part of a range of articles on famous and classic GRP sailing yachts. We hope to interest other magazines as well.
Naturally, we would be happy to get in touch with Contessa sailors from Britain, They are most welcome to join our meeting at Hellevoetsluis this year, which will take place on Saturday, 1 September 2007. For details, page ‘Info’, then choose ‘Contact info’ and fill in the required details). We look forward to meet you some time!
