As part of the tests, the boat, called "New Moon", was entered for three inshore races and the 600-mile Bayona Race. She was second in two of the races, won another, and was first in class in the offshore race, against strong international competition. The OOD34 was not designed primarily to win handicap races. She is the largest of the three boats selected by the Offshore One-Design Conference to provide class racing. The words "One Design" mean that all the boats in the class will be, as nearly as practicable, identical. By the summer of 1979 a fleet of OOD34s will be racing boat-for-boat offshore and over short courses. Doug Peterson drew a hull that was clean, free of distortions, and genuinely fast. Its IOR rating did not figure largelyin his calculations. So successful against racers designed specifically with the IOR in mind.
The OOD34 is built of glassfiber, but in a special way to ensure each boat weighs exactly the same. The hulls and decks are injection-moulded by a process which had been well proven over a 10 year period but never before been applied to the construction of a sailing boat.
